COMMUNITY AID OFFICER

POSTING AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

_Overview:_

Trans people deserve appropriate, accessible and timely healthcare;
care that is person-centred and based on international best practice.
Ireland?s healthcare system is currently not meeting the needs of
our community. This has a negative impact on our mental wellbeing.
We are waiting far too long and we are navigating an often
inaccessible healthcare system. Current waiting lists continue to grow
and the waiting times are getting longer. Covid **Apply on the
website** has also negatively impacted the ability of the gender
clinic to reduce these waiting times.
The Community Aid Officer will oversee a comprehensive new role that
addresses the multiple layers of mental health issues arising for our
community, from accessing healthcare.
The officer will develop and implement a community works approach to
this project that will identify community needs in healthcare and
propose and provide effective solutions to meet them. TENI envisions
the community needs will fall under the following category.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

_1. Healthcare:_

* The Community Aid Officer will work directly with the transgender
community to develop methods of support to those trying to access
hormone replacement therapy, gender affirming care and gender
affirming surgeries and are currently on the waiting lists, or in
private or public services.
* They will provide direct support to members of the community
affected by the delays in treatment having a negative impact on their
mental wellbeing.
* Responsible for planning and implementing Know Your Healthcare
Seminars that will be deployed in virtual and physical locations to
help transgender people better understand the pathway, their rights,
and services available.

* Work alongside TENI?s Health & Education Manager to promote
systemic change to healthcare that will reduce waiting periods, and
allow better access to gender affirming care and as a result reduce
negative mental health impacts.

* Work alongside the Health and Education Manager to create a
community engagement plan to release work that has been done, and run
community information meetings to address community health needs.

* Develop trans affirming content, resources, policy guidelines,
publications to assist the community in navigating the healthcare
system.

_2. Community Works:_

* Responsible for building a community works strategy that addresses
supporting mental health and resilience in the face of healthcare and
social challenges

* Plan and host Community Information Meetings

* Collaborate with the National Community Development Officer on a
plan for integrating health and mental health support into community
support groups, and events.

* Work with the transgender community to develop a narrative of
healthcare experiences and roadblocks that need to be addressed

* Use this narrative to advise the Health & Education Manager to
develop a plan around strategically working with the HSE on the
implementation of best practices for transgender people, and on the
Transgender Healthcare Report

* Responsible for understanding and communicating the national
picture of transgender healthcare to staff, media, and public
* Create a map and list of affirming healthcare professionals to
share with the community
* Become an advocate for patient complaints and wok with the Health
and Education Manager to help in lodging those complaints
* When necessary provide one-to-one support for those within the
community

_3. Media and Communications:_

* Assist the CEO and Health and Education Manager develop a
comprehensive media relations strategy and Transgender Awareness
Health Campaign that includes:

* content around supporting transgender mental health and community
resilience

* Links to helpful organisations
* Support Lines
* HSE and NOSP programs

* Organise and execute How to Tell Your Story seminars for
transgender people to be equipped to share their story, and highlight
societal challenges that need to be addressed
* Help plan and execute TENI Transgender Awareness Week campaign

_4. Other Responsibilities:_

* Develop a monthly report for NOSP
* Develop a monthly report for CEO/Board
* Respond to and track all community engagement
* Respond to and track all community support requests
* Other duties as assigned

Directly reporting to TENI Health and Education Manager
